The Department of Counseling offers both a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science in Human Services (BA/BS-HS). The BA/BS-HS prepares students for bachelor’s level employment in the mental health field and college student affairs. With appropriate course choices, students can be eligible to gain the Texas Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor credential and/or the Qualified Mental Health Provider credential (through an approved employer). Students who prefer a human services/counseling foundation may pursue careers in child advocacy or probation/parole. The degree also provides a pathway for those students planning to pursue a master’s degree leading to credentialing as a Licensed Professional Counselor and/or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Texas. Along with 2 prerequisites (PSY 2301, SOC 1301), and 8 required classes, students will develop a program emphasis by selecting 4 upper level classes from Counseling and 3 upper level courses from Psychology and Sociology.
